The Aapravasi Ghat (“The Immigration Depot”) in Port Louis, Mauritius, was the processing center for more than two million indentured laborers from India, Eastern Africa, Madagascar, China, and Southeast Asia who arrived between 1849 and 1920 to work the region’s sugar plantations. After the British abolished slavery in 1834, they chose Mauritius for a “great experiment” in using indentured labor to replace the slaves. Other colonial powers adopted the system, resulting in a world-wide migration.
